Why not go to the cloud?

Applications

A few days ago, I attended a free presentation by a company where they explained the advantages of living in the cloud over having a server under the kitchen table.

I myself have been going through the bumpy road of external hard drives, CDs then DVDs, pen drives, NAS, rented storage, POP3 versus IMAP mail for the past 20 years, until one Christmas three years ago I took the trouble to start moving all the company stuff to Google G Suite.

I have no regrets.

What was very strange about this presentation was that why do we have to talk about it so much? Why so much persuasion for company managers to listen to their common sense rather than their administrator?

As I started to go through the people I know and the (multi) companies we work for, I realised that it's really depressing.

Centralised systems that cannot be accessed from the outside, unusable mail programs (Lotus Notes), countless applications with a total lack of integration, Office and other programs at least three versions behind, Skype, Dropbox, shared excel files and a huge mess of directories.

And all of this is covered with a sweet feeling, like icing on a cake, that our data is safe because we have it, no one can steal it, no one can see it, because we protect them ourselves!

Dear business leaders, friends and strangers! Do you receive your salary in cash? Do you keep your money in cash in your teddy bear at home?

As long as there has been bill money, there has been cloud money and money has not been lost.

Google for example 2 000 000 000 users and do we know of any lost pictures? No.

Do you know of an excel that stores all your history at the cell level while allowing you to edit as many as you want at the same time? No.

Lots of money per citizen 1800Ft per month? No.

It seems we will be a country of administrators for a long time to come, instead of spending our time on more useful things.
